On 11 November, Ambassador Wu Peng attended and addressed Naspers Awards Ceremony 2024 at Stellenbosch University. Nearly 100 people took part in the event, including Acting Consul General of China in Cape Town Mr Tang Chang'an, senior officials from Stellenbosch University and Naspers, teachers and students from the Chinese Section of Stellenbosch University, as well as journalists.
In his speech, Ambassador Wu congratulated the award-winning students, and thanked Naspers for its support to the Chinese Section and the Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University. He elaborated on the importance of Chinese language learning, citing the examples of President Xi Jinping’s reply to the letter from the faculty and students of the Confucius Institute at the Durban University of Technology, and the outcomes of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s state visit to China in September. Ambassador Wu encouraged the students to better understand China through learning Chinese, and strive to become a new generation carrying forward China-South Africa friendship.
The participants agreed with the importance of learning Chinese. The event was held in a lively and friendly air. Ambassador Wu and the guests appreciated the Chinese songs and dances and other cultural programmes performed by students from the Chinese Section.
