On December 3, Ambassador Wu Peng attended the opening ceremony of the Science Forum South Africa 2024 held in Pretoria and delivered a speech. He introduced China's experience in using legislation to guarantee investment in science and technology, encouraging companies to engage in technological innovation, and cultivating human resources in science and technology. Ambassador Wu noted the Chinese government’s focus on economic and social development through scientific and technological innovation. To resolve social issues such as poverty, unemployment and wealth inequality, it is crucial to create high-quality employment on the basis of scientific and technological innovation. China is ready to work with South Africa and other countries in Africa to advance scientific and technological innovation as well as industrial and agricultural modernisation. Before the opening ceremony, Ambassador Wu and South African Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Blade Nzimande visited the booths of Chinese Embassy in South Africa, China National Nuclear Corporation and Huawei.
The Science Forum South Africa is an important annual event organised by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation. It has been held for many years, and has become a major platform to discuss science, technology and innovation issues. Participants include the science and technology community, companies, government and diplomatic missions in South Africa and other countries in Africa. About 5,000 people from over 80 countries have registered at this year’s Forum, and more than 80 research institutes, companies, government departments and diplomatic missions have been part of the exhibition.
