On February 8, Chinese Ambassador Wu Peng attended the "2025 Johannesburg Chinatown New Year Celebration", joined by Consul General Pan Qingjiang and Counselor Liao Xiaoying. The event saw the participation of Gauteng provincial officials, including Mr Matome Kopano Chiloane, alongside thousands of overseas Chinese and local residents.
Ambassador Wu conveyed New Year blessings, highlighting South Africa's role as a symbol of cultural inclusivity and racial harmony. He expressed gratitude for the long-standing support extended to the Chinese community by the South African government and people. He reaffirmed China’s support for South Africa's pursuit of independence and justice. Ambassador Wu encouraged the Chinese diaspora to continue the traditions of patriotism, unity and progress, so as to contribute to their motherland's development, the China-South Africa friendship, and China’s national unity.
Organized by the Johannesburg Chinatown Management Committee, the event featured vibrant cultural performances, fireworks, and a festive parade, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to celebrate the New Year in a joyful and lively atmosphere.
