On June 1st, Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Wu Peng attended the final round and award ceremony of the 2025 “Culture of China – Water Cube Cup” Chinese Song Contest in Johannesburg. The event, held in Sandton, brought together nearly 500 guests, including Chinese Consul General Pan Qingjiang, Gauteng lawmaker Sun Yaoheng, Chinese community leaders, contestants' families and local friends.
In his remarks, Ambassador Wu praised the competition for highlighting the richness of Chinese culture and the emotional power of Chinese music. He noted the vibrant energy of young performers and the strong sense of cultural pride in the audience. He emphasized that the contest is more than just a talent show—it’s a bridge for deepening China-South Africa cultural ties. Wu encouraged continued support for such events to strengthen community bonds and friendship between the two nations.
Now in its 15th year, the “Water Cube Cup” has become a staple cultural celebration. The Johannesburg leg, organized by the Huaxing Art Troupe with backing from the Chinese Embassy and Consulate General, featured 18 finalists across four age groups. From heartfelt ballads to spirited performances, the night was full of excitement.
Complementing the contest were lively interludes, including a qipao fashion show, children's dances, and traditional South African singing and dancing, creating a festive and joyful atmosphere that wrapped up the evening on a high note.
