The Embassy noticed a recent surge in violent crimes targeting Chinese nationals. Just around this weekend, two counts of kidnappings, one case of fatal home invasion and robbery inflicted upon Chinese community, posing severe threats to the lives and property safety of our compatriots. The Embassy hereby issues an urgent and stern reminder to all Chinese nationals in South Africa to immediately heighten security awareness and take proactive measures to prevent violent crimes:

Exercise extreme caution in selecting business and residential locations, avoiding high-risk areas. Choose communities with robust security infrastructure and safer surroundings to minimize exposure to criminal threats.

Strictly plan business schedules and avoid going out after dark. Given South Africa’s current winter season, businesses are highly recommended to close by 5:00 PM to ensure safe return before nightfall, steering clear of peak crime hours.

Significantly enhance security measures. Those with financial means could engage licensed security firms, fortify premises and commute routes with both personnel and technological safeguards, integrate into local communities with low-profile conduct, and never flaunt wealth to deter targeting.

Strengthen communal vigilance—avoid stay or travel alone. Solitary individuals are prime targets for criminals and lack responsive aid in emergencies. Always ensure someone could accompany you when outside. Elderly or vulnerable individuals shall equip panic buttons and maintain regular contact with relatives and friends.

Memorize emergency contacts numbers and be prepared for crisis response. If fall victim to crimes, families and partners must immediately report to local police, the Embassy/Consulate, or seek assistance from the Chinese Community Policing Cooperation Center, provide detailed information, and fully cooperate with investigations to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.
