On 25 October 2025, the Chinese Embassy in South Africa hosted a symposium commemorating the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration to China from Japanese occupation. Ambassador Wu Peng delivered remarks, and addresses were also given by members of the South African National Assembly, political parties, think tanks and the media. Around 40 guests attended, including representatives from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, the African National Congress, the South African Communist Party, think tanks and the media.

Noting the designation of October 25 as “Commemoration Day of Taiwan’s Restoration”, Ambassador Wu outlined the historical context of the Taiwan question. He emphasized that Taiwan's restoration serves as irrefutable proof of the Chinese government’s restoration of sovereignty over Taiwan. Once and for all, UNGA Resolution 2758 resolved, politically, legally and procedurally, the issue of the representation of the whole China, including Taiwan, at the UN. The one-China principle has become a universal consensus of the international community, and a fundamental norm of international relations. Ambassador Wu denounced the sinister attempts of current ‘Taiwan independence’ forces to split the motherland, commended the South African government for its longstanding adherence to the one-China principle, and expressed China's readiness to work with South Africa to defend the post-war international order and promote international fairness and justice.

Speakers from South Africa reaffirmed that there is only one China in the world and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. They expressed support for the South African government's adherence to the one-China policy, and believed that all sectors of South African society will continue to support China in safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The symposium took place in a warm and cordial atmosphere. Participants unanimously voiced their support for the one-China principle, and extended their best wishes for greater development in China-South Africa relations in the new era.
