On April 2, Ambassador Wu Peng attended the launch of the Sino–SA Media Club. In his remarks, he extended congratulations on the Club’s establishment, and elaborated on the Five-Point Initiative proposed by China and Pakistan for restoring peace and stability in the Gulf and Middle East region. The Acting Director-General of South Africa’s Government Communication and Information System and heads of local media outlets attended the event and delivered remarks. Over 100 representatives from the South African government and media were present.

Ambassador Wu introduced the background and key elements of the Five-Point Initiative. He noted that countries of the Global South have all experienced the aggression and oppression of colonialism and imperialism, and therefore understand the heavy costs involved. History has repeatedly shown that any unlawful use of force is doomed to fail. China and South Africa share similar positions on issues concerning the Gulf and Middle East region. As important members of the Global South and key forces within the BRICS mechanism, the two countries should strengthen coordination to safeguard world peace.

The participants spoke highly of the Initiative, describing Ambassador Wu’s briefing as “big news.” They noted that, against the backdrop of ongoing regional tensions, the Initiative reflects China’s sense of responsibility and wisdom as a major country, provides a practical way forward for political settlement of conflicts, and deserves wide attention and support from the international community.
