On May 15, the Chinese Embassy in South Africa and the Sino-SA Media Club jointly hosted a briefing session on China's zero-tariff policy for 53 African countries having diplomatic relations with China. Ambassador Wu Peng delivered a keynote speech. Other speakers included Professor David Monyae, Director of the Research on Chinese Modernisation Think Tank, Professor Yang Jun of China’s University of International Business and Economics, and Professor Gabila Nubong of the North-West University. More than 100 participants attended the online event, including representatives from South African think tanks, universities, chambers of commerce, businesses, the South Africa-China Economy and Trade Association, Chinese companies in South Africa, and Chinese and South African media outlets.

Ambassador Wu Peng highlighted the significance of China’s zero-tariff policy and its positive role in advancing China–South Africa and China–Africa relations. He emphasized that the policy demonstrates China’s long-term commitment to Africa, and that it will create tangible opportunities for South African companies. He noted it is now time that China and South Africa work together to translate the great policy opportunities into concrete results. He stressed that the two countries should jointly oppose discriminatory trade restrictions that violate WTO rules and promote healthy growth in economic cooperation. Ambassador Wu also answered questions about the implementation of the policy from participants and media representatives, including those with the South African Broadcasting Corporation.
Participants at the event spoke highly of the zero-tariff policy, noting that it creates major opportunities for South Africa to access China’s vast market, increase domestic employment, and attract more Chinese investment. They hoped to see more progress in cooperation between the two countries to bring greater benefits to the peoples.
