On October 22, 2026, the Chinese Embassy in South Africa, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition and the South African Revenue Service jointly hosted a briefing in Pretoria on China’s Zero-tariff Treatment for African countries. Ambassador Wu Peng, South African Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau, and Interim Deputy Commissioner of South African Revenue Service Schalk Human attended and delivered remarks. Approximately 400 participants attended the event, including representatives from the South African government, businesses, and trade associations, as well as representatives from Chinese enterprises in South Africa and members of the Chinese business community.

Ambassador Wu Peng noted that China-South Africa economic and trade cooperation has continued to gain positive momentum. Since the implementation of China’s zero-tariff policy on May 1, South Africa’s exports to China have grown significantly, the structure of trade between the two countries has improved, and a large number of Chinese companies have expanded their investment in South Africa. Ambassador Wu stressed that China will work with South Africa to advance negotiations on the Early Harvest Arrangement under the Framework Agreement on Economic Partnership for Shared Development, providing a long-term, stable and predictable institutional guarantee for trade between the two countries.

Minister Parks Tau spoke highly of China’s zero-tariff policy, and noted that South Africa will work to reach an agreement with China on the Early Harvest Arrangement, and make full use of the policy to boost export growth and local manufacturing.

Interim Deputy Commissioner Schalk Human stated that the South African Revenue Service will work with the Chinese government to create a better export environment for South African companies.

Representatives from the Chinese Embassy in South Africa, Department of Trade, Industry and Competition and South African Revenue Service delivered briefings and answered questions. Over 400 online viewers watched the event live.
