It is reported that the Council of Tshwane City has recently decided to put the name of Mao Zedong, founder of the People's Republic of China, into the city's geographical names bank, and there have been some irresponsible comments on this issue. I want to make a few points. Firstly, it is the internal affair of Tshwane city to choose geographical names for street names and we respect their decision. Secondly, Mr. Mao Zedong, as the founder of the People's Republic of China, is deeply loved, respected and remembered by the Chinese people and the people around the world. He made great contributions not only to the liberation cause of the Chinese people, but also to the liberation cause of many African countries that fought for their independence from colonial rule. He also devoted himself to the development of China-Africa friendship and cooperation. Thirdly, it is totally unacceptable that certain people made vicious and irresponsible personal attacks on the beloved late Chinese leader. We feel deeply indignant and strongly condemn such remarks.
