On 22 September, Minister Qin Zhanpeng attended a Wuju Opera Performance organised by the Zhejiang Wuju Opera Research Institute at the Arts Centre Theatre of the University of Johannesburg (UJ), and delivered remarks. The event was also attended by Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, UJ’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, and Professor Federico Freschi, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture.

In his remarks, Minister Qin introduced that as a typical example of traditional Chinese theatre, Wuju Opera has its own artistic appeal, distinctive style and unique cultural value accumulated in nearly 500 years. Minister Qin made a comparison between Wuju Opera and South Africa's diverse traditional art forms, and underscored that although China and South Africa are far apart, we have many things in common when it comes to art. He noted that this performance is a chance for cultural exchange, allowing South African audiences to experience the unique charm of the Chinese culture and bringing the two peoples closer.

The performance featured martial arts, instrumental music, dance and mythological narratives, presenting a rich array of programmes that showcased the diverse charms of traditional Chinese opera. The theatre was filled with faculty and students from UJ, as well as local residents. The audience remained engrossed throughout, frequently responding with warm applause, cheers, laughter and heartfelt emotions.
