I was shocked to learn that former President Nelson Mandela has passed away. On behalf of the Chinese government and people and in my own name, I wish to offer our profound condolences over his passing and sincere sympathies to his family.

Mr. Mandela is a world-renowned statesman. He led the South African people in winning the fight against apartheid through protracted and arduous struggle over the years and made historic contribution to the birth and growth of a new South Africa. He is loved by the South African people and respected by people all over the world.

Mr. Mandela, one of the founders of China-South African relations, visited China twice and vigorously advocated for enhanced friendship and cooperation between the two countries in various fields. The Chinese people will always remember his outstanding contribution to China-South African relations and the progress of mankind.

I wish to continue to work with you to consolidate and grow the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and South Africa and carry forward our friendship, to the benefit of our two countries and peoples. Together, we will make positive contribution to the lofty cause of world peace and development.
